Coachella Valley Snaps Four-Game Winless Skid with Comeback Win in San Diego
The Coachella Valley Firebirds (3-2-2-1) scored twice in the final two minutes of regulation to pick up a 3-2 win over the San Diego Gulls on Wednesday night at Pechanga Arena. J.R. Avon netted two goals in the closing moments to propel the Firebirds to victory and help the team snap a four-game winless skid.
San Diego opened the scoring with two goals in the first 12:58 before Lukas Dragicevic picked up his first goal of the season. Logan Morrison and Jagger Firkus earned the helpers on Dragicevic’s strike.
The game went goalless through the second period and for the first 18:19 of the third. Coachella Valley pulled their goaltender, Nikke Kokko, for the extra skater and Morrison found Avon for the tying tally. With the game even, Julius Miettinen skated down the ice and fed Avon in the high slot. Avon’s shot beat Laurent Brossoit to put the Firebirds ahead with 21 seconds left.
The Firebirds outshot the Gulls 31-20 and went 0-for-2 on the powerplay while killing off two Gulls man-advantage opportunities.
